Well yes but how do you send someone an email if you don’t know what their email address is? It’s almost second nature now to simply click on your email application, pull up someone’s address and fire off a quick message. Log in to Facebook and click “Find Friends”. Type the persons name who you are looking for and click “People” in the menu. You should see a list of matches appear. You might get a lot of matches depending on how common a name you are looking for but most people have pictures loaded so it’s often not difficult to find the right person.

FB does not display peoples email addresses but it will allow you to send them a private message as long as the recipient has opted to receive messages.

Not absolutely everyone is on FB unfortunately and many that are do not want to be contacted by anyone who happens to look them up so they may have set their options to stop this happening. If you don’t see a link to send them a message you can ask them to be your friend or you can hunt for one of their friends who does allow messages and try and contact your person through them.

Why is it that so many people decide to move to a new place without finding out anything about their neighbors first? Very few people would consider moving to a property without checking out the location, the local facilities and the views first. If you watch a lot of TV shows you might think that all the people in the neighborhood will come and knock on your door and introduce themselves. If you suspect that there might be some incorrect information on your FBI Identification Record or “Rap Sheet” as it is commonly known as, then you will need to make a request to obtain it. You have a right to do a criminal background check on yourself but you will have to jump through a few hoops to get hold of it.

There is a fee payable that you must include with your application. At the time of writing the stated fee was $18 which is a nominal fee to cover administrative costs.

The worst part of the application form is the fact that you have to send in a full set of your fingerprints to prove that you are who you say you are. In this instance, a drivers license and a utility bill just won’t be enough.

Fingerprints must be taken carefully so that they are clean prints and you must fill in a fresh fingerprint card too. In theory I suppose that you could do all of this yourself but I would suggest that you go down to your local law enforcement office and get an expert fingerprint technician to do it for you. This should avoid any problems with the process.

Can you get an FBI criminal background check on someone else?

No, you can’t, not through the FBI site anyway. The application has to be done in person and anyone trying to get one for someone else would need to obtain a full, yes all 10, set of fingerprints. You need to be determined just to get your own rap sheet, it would be near impossible to get one for someone else without their knowledge.

Nothing is ever absolutely free I know and you aren’t going to get such a complete and accurate criminal background check on yourself as you will direct from the FBI itself. You can use public records web sites on a pay as you go arrangement where each search you perform costs you a little money. The good sites can provide good value for money when you are background checking people in this way. That’s the way I used to do it but as I started to do more and more background checks I switched to using a membership site instead. When you join a public records membership site you can do an unlimited number of absolutely free background checks whenever you like. This can work out much cheaper and be much more fun.

It’s not just about the cost. When you can do as much background checking as you want, you will find that you use it more and more to find out stuff about everyone you know and then go on to their relatives and neighbors. It’s doesn’t cost you any more so why not.

You should at least try out a membership site. Most sites will give you a short trial for a very small fee and it’s enough to do background checks on almost everyone you know.
