2: Ask your boyfriend or girlfriend if they’re married

This sounds even more obvious than asking his friends doesn’t it? But you assume that he’s not married don’t you? If he’s married what is he doing going out with you? A good question so ask it. Be direct and come straight out with it to give yourself the element of surprise.

Now he’s going to say “no of course I’m not married” whether he is or not so you must pay close attention to the way he says it. If he looks uneasy and avoids making eye contact with you when he answers then he could be lying to you. If this happens then ask “are you sure you’re not married”. If he starts to sweat or gets annoyed then that too can be a sign that all is not as it appears.

3: Do a lie detector test on him

No I don’t mean that you should strap him up to a polygraph or anything like that. There is an easier and altogether more relaxing way do do it. All you have to do is talk to him a lot and ask him a lot of questions. You do this anyway right so it’s no big deal.

The trick to detecting lies is to really listen to the answers that he gives you. If today he tells you he’s an airline pilot but last week he told you that he was scared of heights and that he has poor eyesight then this might just be a lie. If he tells you that he’s a doctor but you can’t figure out when he actually studied and worked as one then this could also be a lie.

Look for inconsistencies in the things that he tells you. Remember it only takes one lie to make him a liar. If you can find just one thing that you know is definitely a lie then how can you trust anything else he’s told you?

Are you trying to get in touch with someone that you have no contact information for but you think that it might be a good idea to send them an email? Well it’s a good idea except that you have to find their email address first.

Don’t worry, you are not alone here. I’ve found myself in the same situation several times. I like sending email because it’s quick, easy and usually relatively unobtrusive but what do you do if you don’t have the address?

The obvious answer is to use a specialist

You can spend a lot of time searching for an email address so it’s often best to go with the fastest method that has a good chance of working first. My favorite quick method is to go for an online email database specially designed to trace down email addresses for you. It’s not guaranteed that you will find the address on one of these sites but you have a very good chance of doing so.

There are literally thousands of domains and email providers on the Internet and the addresses that you are looking for could be almost any combination of letters and other characters. There is absolutely no way that any kind of compulsory registration to a central register of email addresses could ever have worked. At least if there were such a thing then email would be a lot different to what we know it as today. This is why specialist web sites have been collecting email addresses from anywhere that they can get them for years.

If you don’t find the email address you are looking for in an online email database then it’s time to get your thinking cap on and do some real Internet sleuthing to find it.

Guessing an email address isn’t easy and it requires a degree of creativity. If you can come up with a few reasonable possibilities for what the address might be then you can send them all a polite message asking them if they are the person that you are looking for. Now get your list of name combinations and domains and put them together with an ‘@’ between them like this .@domain. For example john.smith@nowhere.com. Do this for all combinations to come up with a list of all possibilities. You might just have guessed the right address somewhere in this list.

How to guess a work address

If you know where the person you are looking for works then you can try guessing their corporate email address. This can often be a lot easier than guessing a personal address because corporate emails often use a more systematic approach. First find the domain for the corporate email. You can do this by looking up the web site for the business. Then look around the site for any kind of contact information that displays an email address. If you can find any address then you can examine it and have a good guess at what your persons address might be. It could be their full name with a dot in between or first initial followed by last name is a popular scheme.

Make up a list as with the personal addresses and send a polite message to each of them. Then wait to see if you get any replies.

Licences

You should check that all relevant certificates and licenses are valid. It is amazing how often this crucial step is ignored even when it involves doctors and lawyers and other professionals whose credentials should not be taken for granted. All it takes is a quick call to the issuing authority.

Academic credentials

Sometimes I think that everyone except me lies about their academic achievements on their resume. They do it and get away with it because employers don’t include it in their employment background check procedures and if they do then it usually gets ignored. You should at least check that the qualification claimed was in fact obtained by calling the issuing body ask asking for verification.

Clicking ‘People’ from the menu will show you members who match the name. You may well get a long list of people to choose from depending on how common the name is. Finding the right one can often be easy though because because most people have their photo uploaded.

When you have found the person that you are looking for you can then send them a private message by clicking the link by their name. The site will not show you persons email address but you can ask the person to send it to you in your message. Remember to be polite at all times when emailing and messaging people. You don’t want to offend anyone.

Facebook is good but it isn’t always the answer

With a little luck you may be able to find someone’s email address using this technique but it’s far from foolproof and it does take time. As I said most people seem to be on this social networking site but not everyone is. Also FB users users can opt to not receive messages from you. If they have done this then it will not be nearly as easy for you to contact them. If you find this to be the case and you can’t send your person a message, take a look at the profile of some of their friends. If one of them allows messages then you can ask them to forward your message to the person that you are interested in.

This is why I always suggest that you try an online email tracerweb site first. Utilize a web site that specializes in finding email addresses for you.
